Lal as Mathewoos

Taking a gap from his big budgeted gangster movies, Lal is back to play the son of the soil in the new movie by Roshan Andrews. The untitled flick will have him as Mathewoos, the owner of a Farmhouse in the bank of Periyar. Mohanlal has already started practicing under a trainer to look slim, as the hardworking man of a village. The movie which will bring back the acting merits of Lal-Thilakan duo will also feature a number of artists in smaller roles.

Scripted by James Albert, the movie will be another project of Aashirwad cinemas and Max Lab Release. The other Max Lab movies which will see the limelight of celluloid soon will be ‘Angel John’ and A R Sanjeev's ‘Janakan’.

Mohanlal, the superstar of Malayalam film industry has been choosen for this years Sree Chithira Tirunal award which is instituted by the Sree Chithira Tirunal Trust in memory of the erstwhile King of Travancore. The earlier recipients of the award includes agricultural scientist M S Swaminathan, ISRO chairman G Madhavan Nair and National Security advisor M K Narayanan.

Lal in ‘Mahendrajaalam’

Rajeevnath, the famous art house director will take a new turn in his filmi career and will present his first commercial movie in the title ‘Mahendrajaalam’. The project planned to take off next year will feature Mohanalal in the major role. Also in the cast will be Reema Kallingal, Anoop Menon and Raj Tushy. Anoop Menon will script this movie for Rajeevanath.

Incidentally Rajeevnath's previous movie ‘Pakal Nakshatrangal’ was also from the same team. After the commercial debacle of the movie, most of the share of the accolades went to Anoop Menon while Rajeevnath was criticised for the old patterns of directorial style which is said to be the reason of the downfall of the movie at the Box Office.

‘Yodha’ for a second part

Continuing with the series of recent sequels, Mollywood will be offering another of its super hit for a second part. The 1992 hit movie ‘Yodha’ which featured Mohanlal and Madhubala and in fact, one of the first movies of AR Rahman will go in for the making of a second part by the next year. This new project will be directed by Sanjeev Sivan and will be made in Hindi, as well. Big names like AR Rahman, Richard Herrovites, Sreekarprasad, Santhosh Sivan and Sean Kerbey will team up for this thriller which will be produced by Network 18. The movie will be presented in 3D version also and will be shot at Nepal, New Zealand and parts of Kerala. The other details about the title of the project, and its cast and crew are awaited.

Interestingly the original movie was directed by Sanjeev's brother Sangeeth Sivan, who later turned out as a famous director in Bollywood.

‘Angel John’ for October 18

Mohanlal's new movie ‘Angel John’ will get into theatres by the 18th of this month. Featuring Santhanu, the son of Poornima and Bhagiyaraj in an important role, the movie will have Nithya Menon (of ‘Aakashagopuram’ fame) and Mamtha as the heroines.

The movie directed by Jayasuriya is cinematographed by Ajayan Vincent, who made a strong start in Malayalam with the recent movie ‘Bhramaram’. Also in the cast of this movie are Lalu Alex, Vijayaraghavan, Ambika, Baiju, Bijukuttan, Jagathy and Sona Nair.

Before the release of ‘Angel John’ Mohanlal will have his Onam release in ‘Alexander The Great’, directed by Murali Nagavally.

The new Mohanlal movie ‘Alexander, The Great’ has almost completed its shoot at Dubai. The rest few portions of the movie, directed by Murali Nagavally, will be completed at locales at Dubai. After being conferred as Lt. Colonel in the Territorial Army, Superstar Mohanlal was back to Kerala Today. The actor was greeted with cheers from his huge fans who were waiting for hours outside Kochi airport to get a glimpse of their favourite actor, that too in army uniform. But to the disappointment of them Lal appeared in just a casual blue jeans and a black shirt.

Seeing the big crowd and hearing about their intentions, Lal made it clear that he can appear in army attires as per the rule, only at the official functions of the territorial army. The actor is all set to lead his battalion and accept a salute from the prime minister in a Army parade, this October, along with other functions like Band Display and Blood Donation Camp planned as part of the Diamond Jubilee Celebrations of the Territorial Army. Before that he will go on for a month's training at the Kannur Territorial Battalion.

Earlier this week, Army chief general Deepak Kapoor has formally “pipped” the actor after the impressive ‘investiture’ ceremony at the Army Headquarters.

Lt Col Mohanlal will be working with the Kerala based 122 Infantry Battalion of the Territorial Army (TA)

In the last couple of years Lal had been to Tiger Hill and Dras in Kargil to shoot for his hit movies like ‘Keerthichakra’ and ‘Kurukshetra’ and to experience first hand, he conflict conditions and the reflex actions of army officers on adverse conditions, which lead to his interest in joining the territorial army.

Lieutenant Colonel Rank confers to Mohan Lal

Superstar Mohan Lal donned the Army's olive-green uniform. He was conferred the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel by the Chief of the Army staff General Deepak Kapoor at a function at the Army headquarters in New Delhi on Thursday. He has been given this rank for his excellent patriotic roles in the films 'Keerthichakra' and 'Kuruskhethra' directed by Major Ravi.

He is the second recent high-profile personality after Kapil Dev to don the Territorial Army uniform. Kapil was honoured in October 2008. Lal will join the 122 Infantry Batalion [Territorial Army] of Chennai Regiment or Kannur Terriers. He would be the brand ambassador of the Army. He had visited Kargil a couple of times to get training.

Under the TA system, citizens from all walks of life can volunteer for 'part-time military service' while pursuing their regular professions during peace-time. In the event of national emergencies, they may be called upon to become 'full-time' personnel to act in a supporting role to regular Army units deployed to meet the country's defence and internal security requirements.

After the commissioning, Mohanlal visited Union Defence Minister A.K. Antony at his office. "This is one of the most precious moments of my life, and I will do all I can for the good of the nation, in the true spirit of a soldier. Like others in our country, I pride the armed forces and it is dream come true that I can now serve shoulder to shoulder with our Officers/ Junior Commissioned Officers and men." Lal said. His wife and son were also with him.

Mohanlal to join Territorial Army Thursday

Malayalam superstar Mohanlal will be commissioned into the Territorial Army Thursday by army chief Gen. Deepak Kapoor in the rank of Lt. Colonel.

Speaking to IANS over telephone from Delhi, Mohanlal said: 'I am certainly happy and am looking forward to it.'

The 49-year-old actor had in October said that he was interested in joining the Territorial Army. Rules had to be amended to accommodate the national award winning actor as men above the age of 42 are not eligible to join the volunteer force.

Last year former Indian cricket team captain Kapil Dev had joined the Territorial Army.

Malayalam superstar Mohanlal may soon start an IPL team for Kerala. With the BCCI looking to include more teams into IPL, many heavyweights from Kerala have joined the fray to have a team for their home state.

It is believed that he is in talks with director Priyadarshan to work out the details. Both Priyadarshan and Mohanlal love cricket and are truly raring to have a team for Kerala.

Bhramaram postponed to July 2

In a bid to avoid an unnecessary battle between Mammootty's fantasy-filled adventure Pattanathil Bhootham and Mohanlal's Blessy-directed Bhramaram, which were slated for June 25 release, the makers has postponed the release of Bhramaram to July. It is confirmed that Pattanathil Bhootham will be released on June 25 in 111 screens, while Bhramaram will release on July 2.

Starring Mammootty in a double role as an adventurous bike rider and a friendly ghost, Pattanathil Bhootham was originally scheduled for release on May 14, but was postponed due to delay in completion of its graphic work. Produced under the banner of Hi Bright Movie Creations, Pattanathil Bhootham has Kavya Madhavan as heroine opposite Mammootty for the first time in her career.

Produced by Raju Mallyath and Zulfikar under the banner of Yuvan Entertainments, Bhramaram has Mohanlal in the role of a lorry driver plying through the high ranges of Kerala. Mohanlal to start practicing to join army!

Mohanlal who had expressed a desire to join the Territorial Army (TA), a voluntary part-time civilian force, was conferred with the honorary title of Lieutenant Colonel last year.

He had a fascination for the armed forces and wanted to join the army after college, but became a star.

Now as a part of his becoming a Lieutenant Colonel, he has to undergo training at the TA’s 122 Infantry Battalion of Madras Regiment in Kannur.

Last week, the Commanding officer of the Kannur Regiment met him and gave him equipments necessary for the training.

Mohanlal after the training will have to go to New Delhi where the Chief of Army Staff will commission the star into Indian Army.

Angel John: Mohanlal in a Jayasurya film

Angel John' - that's the name of the Mohanlal-starrer to be directed by Jayasurya, also known as S.Y. Surya. Jayasurya, the son of noted scenarist-cum-theatre personality, the late S.L. Puram Sadanandan, had made his directorial debut with the Dileep starrer 'The Speed Track'. 'Angel John' is his second film.

To be produced by K.K. Narayandas under the banner of Creative Team, 'Angel John' will have Tamil actor Shantanu (the son of the ever-popular K. Bhagyaraj and Poornima Bhagyaraj) in a key role. Jayasurya and Manaf will be writing the script, based on story by Manaf.

The cast for the film includes Bhama, Jagathy Sreekumar, Suraaj Venjaramoodu, Bheeman Reghu, Baiju, Geetha etc. Songs by Subhash and Saseendra Varma will be set to tune by Ouseppachchan. Ajayan Vincent will be the cinematographer. 'Angel John' is scheduled to start rolling on July 1 at Kochi.

Mohanlal to become a Lt Colonel

Padmashree Bharat Lt Colonel Mohanlal.

This title does not belong to a forthcoming film nor is it a figment of imagination. It is a fact. In a month, the nation will confer 48-year-old Malayalam actor, Mohanlal, with the honorary title of Lieutenant Colonel in the Territorial Army.

Mohanlal will be the first actor in the country to get such a prestigious title from the army. The only other celebrity to get this title is former cricket captain Kapil Dev [Images].

It is learnt that the chief of army recommended Mohanlal's name to the Defence Ministry. An official MoD communique is expected in a month.

"The proposal has been forwarded. A decision will be taken soon. I cannot reveal the details now," an officer in the Territorial Army said, seeking anonymity.

Mohanlal, shooting for a film in the remote areas of Ooty, remained unavailable for comments.

It is perhaps the two army roles that he donned -- in Keerthichakra and Kurukshetra -- that led to this new development. Keerthichakra depicted the army's anti-militancy operations in Jammu and Kashmir [Images], while Kurukshetra dealt with the Kargil [Images] war.

Mohanlal the greatest and the complete actor of malayalam film industry is now comes again as a singer through his latest movie Bhramaram. Mohanlal is not a trained singer but he has got the tallent for that. Here's the superstar once again in his singing avtar. Mohanlal has recently sung and recorded a song for his forthcoming film 'Bhramaram', directed by Blessy.

Mohanlal is singing the song "Annaarakannaa vaa poovaalaa…" in the movie. The song is written by Anil Panachooran and set to tune by Mohan Sithara, was recorded recently at Mohanlal's own Vismaya Studios. The song "Annaarakannaa vaa poovaalaa…" is one with a folk base.

Malayalam Superstar Mohanlal has completed his new Tamil film Unnai Pol Oruvan with Ulaka Nayakan Kamal Hassan. This new film, which is a remake of the Hindi classic A Wednesday is being jointly produced by Kamal Hassan and UTV productions. The other major highlight is that the music for this film is being composed by Shruti Hassan, daughter of Kamal Hassan.

Shooting for this film was completed at the Ramoji Rao film city in Hyderabad, a couple of days ago. This new film, which was directed by debutant Chakri Toleti will now get completed including the post production work, in a month from now. The film has been shot entirely in Hyderabad and is planned as a bilingual, simultaneously made in Tamil and Telugu (Eenadu).

One of the most expected film of the year, Unnai Pol Oruvan was earlier scheduled to be released on July, but now it is all set to release on August 12. This date was selected because a good fifty years ago, was when Kamal’s first film, Kalathur Kannamma was released. The other major reason for the August release is that this film can also be featured as Mohanlal's Onam offering to his fans in Kerala.

Mohanlal was born on May 21, 1960(which incidentally makes him a Taurean, and he seems to fit the bill) in Pathanamthitta district of Kerala State (India) to Sri Viswanathan Nair and Smt. Santhakumari. He also had an elder brother named Pyare Lal. In his mother's own words, 'quite, a very quite child' is how we can characterize young Mohanlal.

He did his schooling from Mudavanmukal School and Model School (Thiruvananthapuram) and completed his B.com from M.G. College (Thiruvananthapuram). Incidentally, he knows famous director and his personal good friend Priyadarsan(with whom he has worked in the maximum no. of films -29) from childhood. Though not the best of friends at the time (Priyan recalls them fighting over the same girls), they had one common passion that brought them together-Cinema. Priyadarsan still fondly remembers the hours they'd spend together in the college canteen discussing cinema.

It is a little known fact that Mohanlal won a Best Actor Award when in the sixth standard in school, an award usually won only by the people from tenth standard. His genuine interest led him and his friends to establish a company named 'Bharath Cine Group'. On September 3, 1978 they began shooting for 'Thiranottam'. The team included Suresh Kumar, Unni, Priyadarsan, S.Kumar, Ashok Kumar among others. Mohanlal played the role of a mentally challenged servant in the film. The location for shooting was in and around Mohanlal's house at Mudavanmukal and Suresh's house. Even after tiding over financial problems, the film ran into rough weather with the Censor Board and was never released.

But this setback did little to sway the hold of deep love for acting. Even when in college, he went with friends to Chennai (then Madras)-one of the melting pots for South Indian Film Industry-in search of a job as an actor. They occupied Room No 3 of the famous Swamy's lodge. This is when they came across an ad in the Malayala Manorama daily looking for a youngster for a role in a film. Unhappy with the way he looked in photograph, he declined from applying. But Suresh, aware of his natural talent, secretly sent his photograph anyway. Mohanlal received a telegram the next day and very soon was displaying his skills in front of an interview panel comprising of the likes of Fazil, Sibi Malayil and Jijo. As a result, he received the role of the villain in Fazil's 'Manjil Virinja Pookal'.

This began his fulltime career as an actor in Malayalam films. A workhorse, he would at one time have 35-40 releases in a year. His major break came in 1986 with the all-time hit 'Rajavinte Makan'. This was also the year when he married Suchitra, daughter of a former actor of Tamil films, Balaji.

He won his first State Award for the film T.P.Balagopalan M.A (1986). He has won 4 of them to date. He won his first Filmfare Award for the film Sanmanasullavarkku Samadhaanam (1986). He has won 5 Filmfare Awards to date. He won his first National Best Actor Award for the film Kireedam released in 1989-albeit the jury award. Later he won Best Actor National Awards for Bharatham (1991) and Vaanaprastham (1999). Apart from this, he has won numerous awards over the years for various films.

The hallmark of Mohanlal's acting is the spontaneity of performance. It is quite a well-known fact that he dosen't seriously rehearse or prepare for his roles. He just becomes the character he is playing for the duration between 'Action' and 'Cut'. So it is not uncommon to hear a reply like 'I don't know' from him when asked about how he carries out something like not blinking when he turns mentally retarded in the film 'Thalavattam', a characteristic even he wasn't aware of at the time; about how he gets the nuances so very right. In his own words " If you study it and then act the role, everything will flounder. Good acting just happens. And personally I don't think one needs to work on the character unless one plays a historical character." For those in front of the screen (the audience), the best thing about Mohanlal is his versatility. It seems he can play absolutely any role under the sun convincingly. And unlike many versatile actors who have traded intensity owing to their versatility, Mohanlal can be most intense if the role demands, the proof being his performances in the numerous action films he's worked in. Priyadarsan calls him the best actor India has ever produced.

Mohanlal established Pranavam Arts to be able to produce the kind of films he had an intense desire to create. And 'Beautiful' is the least we can say to describe some of his creations. His film 'Kaalapani', released in 1995, won 5 National and 7 State Awards. Another splendid creation, 'Vaanaprastham', released in 1999 won the National Award for Best Film and best actor

In recent years, he has concentrated on working on one film at a time to devote more to quality. In his own words, he's more concerned about whether the script is a good one or not rather than whether the movie will be a big hit or not. A gentle human, he'd do films for friends regardless of the kind of project and the monetary returns. His jovial behaviour with cast and crew has endeared him to one and all.

Mohanlal's innate character is guided by the principle of lack of attachment. He was witness to an unfortunate incident wherein an actor with whom he was performing suddenly collapsed to death in front of him. This incident created a deep impact on his attitude to life. It explains his outlook to life and the reason he has now set his priorities the way he has.

Initially averse to working in Tamil films (his reason being 'too much masala' in them), he has now been part of quite a few, including the controversial 'Iruvar' loosely based on the life of Tamil actor and former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu M.G.R. directed by the very famous director Mani Ratnam. He commented after the making "Hereafter, I will never work with a man of whom I am a fan." The reason being he often forgot to say 'Cut' while shooting!!!

His commitment to his roles is seen in his involvement during the making of the film. It is a well-known fact that he learnt Bharatnatyam for his role in 'Kamaladalam' and learnt 'Kathakali' for his role in 'Vaanaprastham'. Though, typical of this simple and humble human, he often downplays his efforts pointing that it is nothing in comparison to what the masters of the art have put in during years of practice.

Leading a contented life in Chennai (Tamil Nadu) with his wife and two children (Pranavam and Vismaya), he leads a life convinced that there is a force above guiding him through life to whom he gives credits for all his achievements.

We mortals can only wait and pray to continue to be witnesses to the performance of his art while he continues to leave footprints on the sands of time through the medium of cinema.

Mohanlal was born in Pathanamthitta in Kerala to Mr. Vishwanathan Nair, a government employee, and Mrs. Santhakumari. He grew up at Mudavanmugal, Poojappura in Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum), as his father was employed in the Kerala Government Secretariat in the legal department. He attended the local school at Mudavanmugal and later enrolled into the Govt. Model Higher Secondary School, Thiruvananthapuram. An average student at school, he took to acting very early in life, when he used to participate in school-plays. In the sixth grade, young Mohanlal was chosen the best actor in school, an award that was usually bagged by tenth graders. After schooling, he joined Mahatma Gandhi College, Thiruvanathapuram (Under Kerala University) for his bachelors degree. He continued his association with acting and won numerous best actor awards. Here he met a group of fellow-students who were passionate about theatre and feature films. They were instrumental in getting him his first breakthrough in film, and some of them, notably Priyadarshan and Manian Pilla Raju, went on to become popular movie directors and actors. Lal's first film was \"Thiranottam\" (1978). The film ran into trouble with the Censor Board and was never released. His breakthrough came in 1980 at the age of 20, when he was selected for the role of the antagonist in Manjil Virinja Pookkal. 1986 was one of his best years. Sathyan Anthikkad's T.P. Balagopalan M.A. got him his first Kerala State award for best actor. His role of an underworld don in Rajavinte Makan saw the emergence of Mohanlal as one of the leading stars of Malayalam cinema.
